China strongly condemns attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

China on Tuesday strongly condemned the recent attack on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that killed three Spanish and three Colombian peacekeepers.

"China feels shocked about the suicide car bomb attack on UNIFIL and strongly condemns the terrorist act," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a regular press conference.

He also expressed condolences to the Spanish and Colombian governments as well as the families of those who were killed in the attack.

Qin voiced the hope that the UN and Lebanon's government would find and punish the criminals as soon as possible.

The spokesman also called upon the improvement of the protection for the security of the UN peacekeepers.

"China would like to continue the cooperation with the international community to help Lebanon resume peace and stability as soon as possible," Qin said.

A suicide car bomb struck a UNIFIL patrol vehicle on Sunday in southern Lebanon, killing six UN peacekeepers and wounding three others.
