Meteor fragments found in Russia's Chelyabinsk

Scientists have found fragments of a meteor that exploded over Russia's central Urals and triggered a shock wave that injured hundreds and shattered scores of windows, experts said Monday.

Friday's meteor broke into approximately seven large pieces, one of which fell into Lake Chebarkul, some 150 km away from Chelyabinsk, experts said.

Small meteor fragments were found near an ice crater in the lake late Sunday. Tests showed the stony meteor contained 10 percent iron, RIA Novosti reported.

Some 1,200 people, including over 200 children, were injured, mainly by shards of glass, when the meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk on Friday. About 50 people were hospitalized and at least two people were reportedly in grave condition.

The Emergency Situations Ministry searched Lake Chebarkul on Saturday but found no fragments of the meteor, a spokesperson said.
