Fayuan Temple, built in the 19th year of Emperor Taizong reign (AD 645), is the oldest temple in Beijing. It was called Minzhong Temple in Tang Dynasty, and Emperor Yongzheng in Qing Dynasty changed its name.
Fayuan Temple is not only the oldest existing temple in Beijing, but also the site of The Buddhist Academy of China and Buddhist Books and Culture Relics Museum of China. It is an important place for youth to learn about Buddhist culture. In 1983, it was acknowledged as a Chinese key Buddhist temple in Han regions by the State Council. On June 25, 2001, Fayuan Temple was listed by the State Council as one of the fifth batch of important units of cultural relics under the national protection.
In 2000, with the wide spread of Li Ao's book Beijing Fayuan Temple, Fayuan Temple became famous and attracted many visitors.
