June to August is the best time to visit Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The temperature in this period is between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. The grassland scenery is at its best at this time. In winter, monasteries, big or small, hold Buddhist ceremonies during the period from the eighth to the sixteenth day of the first lunar month.
This is the busiest period in Gannan. Apart from the traditional Tibetan festivals, Gannan also has some special festivals for monasteries. For those who are interested in these Buddhist ceremonies, they can visit the Labrang Monastery during the third lunar month.
Visitors who come to Gannan for the first time are usually astonished by two colors—red and blue. Red is the color of the high and thick walls of the monasteries and dwellings, while the blue is for pure and lofty sky. Shi Yu, a post-1980s photographer, kept a record of the red and blue of Gannan through her lenses.
