Sending short messages (SMS) has become one of the most frequently used functions of China's mobile phone users. Statistics show that China's mobile phone users, on average, send about three SMS daily.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Information Industry, in January 2007, China's 467 million mobile phone users sent 41.1 billion SMS messages. Each person sent 2.83 messages per day, on average.

In 2004, there were 330 million mobile phone users in China, and they sent more than 200 billion short messages the entire year. In 2006, the number of China's mobile phone users increased to 460 million, and the volume of mobile SMS messages sent exceeded 429.6 billion. Today, the number of mobile phone users and the volume of short messages sent still show an upward trend. The latest statistics from the Ministry of Information Industry show that, since the beginning of 2007, China's mobile phone users increased about by 6 million monthly; and reached 487 million by the end of April.
