Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said Monday that the reelection of President Pervez Musharraf would ensure political stability and economic prosperity in the country.

Talking to Chief Minister of Pakistan's northeastern Punjab province Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi who called on him at the governor's house in the provincial capital Lahore on Monday afternoon, Aziz said that the continuity in government policies would bring about economic development and further strengthen democratic institutions.

Pakistan needed consistent progress in all the fields as it was the only guarantee for the sovereignty of the country, Aziz said, adding that Musharraf would contest the presidential election between Sept.15 and Oct.15 in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.

Aziz termed increased political activity in the country as a healthy sign that democracy was being strengthened and people were taking interest in the political affairs.

Aziz said people had demonstrated political maturity in the general election in 2002 for having reposed their trust and confidence in those who could ameliorate their lives. People would once again demonstrate their political wisdom in the forthcoming general election, he added.
