At least 13 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed by government troops in Sri Lanka's northern Vavuniya district on Tuesday in separate clashes, defense officials said Wednesday.
Officials said Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels tried two times to breach the Vilaththikulam defense line Tuesday evening but the attempts were repulsed by the Army.
At least 10 LTTE rebels were killed during the confrontation while four soldiers were injured.
In Vavuniya's Pokkaravani area, government troops killed three LTTE rebels on Tuesday morning in a battle and five soldiers were injured in the clash.
Fighting between government troops and the LTTE is shifted to the north after the military claimed in mid-July that the total Eastern Province had been cleared of the LTTE.
More than 5000 people have died in the escalating conflict since the end of 2005.
Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting against the government since the mid- 1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
