Where the rich give back to beautify the community

It is widely believed that the rich in China are not prone to ostentatious displays of wealth.

Here in Kunshan County, Jiangsu Province, however, where the concentration of private entrepreneurs has helped the county rank first in the country for economic and social achievement, a Qiandeng Town leader has managed to coax the rich to show their money - through public projects.

Situated near Zhouzhuang Town, a famous sightseeing spot for its waterscape, Qiandeng is similarly blessed with ancient architecture, smooth-flowing rivers and meticulously carved bridges.

But Qiandeng has lagged behind in tourism infrastructure.

"People complain about the lack of tourism development, but it would be a huge investment to renovate and restore the town's ancient bridges and buildings," said Wang Jinxing, the head of the town since 2000.

Random talks with two entrepreneurs on how ancient philanthropists used to sponsor the paving of roads and building of bridges to improve residents' lives, changed that.

"To my amazement, they volunteered to donate money for the renovations," said Wang, who is in his 30s.

"The two wanted to remain anonymous, but I asked people to carve couplets on the bridge, which integrates their names in an artistic way," said the leader of the town known as the birthplace of Kunqu opera.

The incident inspired many other entrepreneurs in the town, who came up with similar donations for bridges and historic sites.

More than 1,000 private entrepreneurs in the town have since participated in community projects.

Together, they have contributed about 40 million yuan ($5.4 million) since 2000.

"The private entrepreneurs have contributed to a more harmonious relationship between the haves and have-nots," said Wang.

"The authorities are also encouraging the social responsibility of such entrepreneurs," he added.

Compared with many local governments in other areas that strive for economic development, the authorities in the affluent, southern region of Jiangsu Province are focusing on offering better lifestyles for residents and investors.

"We are aiming for service-oriented ways to bring residents together, and the government has a role to play in facilitating these efforts," said Wang.
