In 2007, the number of international students in China grew rapidly, and the number of overseas students studying in China exceeded 190,000 person/times. It is the year when the largest number of overseas students studied in China; the largest number of source countries of overseas students; the largest number of organizations that received the overseas students; and the highest number of Chinese government scholarships, according to the information from the Ministry of Education's website.
Altogether 195,503 overseas students from 188 countries and regions came to study in China in 2007. They were distributed over China's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (excluding Taiwan Province, Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Region); and enrolled in 544 universities and colleges, scientific research institutes and other teaching institutions. The Chinese government awarded scholarships to 10,151 students.
The top five overseas student source countries were the Republic of Korea, Japan, the United States, Vietnam and Thailand with students numbering 64,481, 18,640, 14,758, 9,702 and 7,306 respectively.
