Sixteen candidates will compete in a knockout-style debate tomorrow morning for the four remaining director-general positions within the Nanjing municipal government, the Yangtze Evening Post reported yesterday.
The event will be broadcast live on the news channel of the city's municipal TV station.
The event marks the first time Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, has used a process of public selection to determine its senior government leaders.
The candidates, who will be divided into groups of four, will use their debating skills to secure one of the final four positions within the newly reshuffled municipal government.
Forty-three similar positions have already been filled.
The candidates, whose average age is 40, will each have 15 minutes to make a presentation, after which they will answer questions from the audience, the city's organization department told the newspaper.
The timetable for the announcement of the winners is as yet unknown as the candidates will also have to go through a series of tests with the standing committee and full session of the municipal people's congress.
In February, more than 300 officials of county-level and above, as well as retired senior officials, discussed and recommended candidates for the 47 positions.
All candidates selected for the director-general positions have been, or will be, chosen by a public vote.
Sixteen people, who currently hold vice-director-general positions, were chosen for tomorrow's live debate.
