Yang Jia, the unemployed Beijing man who killed six police officers and injured four others in a knife attack on July 1 in Shanghai received the death sentence yesterday, the Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court announced.
Yang, 28, was impassive throughout the whole hearing. He did not say before being led out of the courtroom whether or not he would appeal to the Shanghai High People's Court.
The defendant's attorneys, Xie Youming and Xie Jin of the Shanghai Mingjiang Law Office, tried to enter a plea of premeditated injury, asking the court to take into account Yang's mental instability.
Psychological tests, however, showed that Yang has criminal tendencies.
The No 2 division of the Shanghai Municipal People's Procuratorate alleged that Yang committed premeditated murder on July 17.
Yang was stopped on Oct 5 of last year for riding an unlicensed bicycle near Shanghai railway station, according to investigations. When questioned, a police officer witness said he suspected Yang of stealing the bicycle.
Yang was later taken to Zhabei station and beaten, he said. But there is no evidence to support this claim.
The defendant later wrote to and called the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau demanding an apology and 10,000 yuan ($1,500) in compensation for psychological damage. Zhabei police station twice sent police officers to Beijing to talk to Yang and his mother .
Yang went to Shanghai again on June 25 this year and purchased a mask and knife.
He later confessed to planning the murder in revenge for his treatment at the station last October.
