Statistics issued by China's Ministry of Railways reveals that railway passenger volume increased significantly in the first five months of this year. In May, railway passenger volume rose by 10.5 percent year-on-year. In the first five months, nationwide railway passenger volume stood at 639.99 million, an increase of 37.96 million people or 6.3 percent year-on-year. Driven by the Labor Day and the Dragon Boat Festival long weekends, railway passenger volume totaled 128.88 million in May, representing an increase of 12.25 million people or 10.5 percent year-on-year.
The newly-opened special passenger railway lines have become new points of growth in railway passenger transport, having a considerable impact on the road and aviation transport markets and advancing a more comprehensive transport system.
Meanwhile, the driving effect of special passenger railway lines on the development of the tourism industry is also very clear. Taking the Labor Day long weekend as an example, the volume of tourists traveling by train from Wuhan to East China rose around 20 percent year-on-year.
From January through May, the total distance traveled by China's passengers reached 342.315 billion kilometers, an increase of 5.262 billion or 1.6 percent year-on-year. In May, it stood at 62.904 billion kilometers, an increase of 2.468 billion or 4.1 percent year-on-year.
