R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty in a Los Angeles court Monday to assaulting his former pop singer girlfriend Rihanna.
The charge was a result of an incident that happened on the eve of the Grammy Awards between Brown, 20, and Rihanna,21; the two were dating at the time, and Rihanna had suffered injuries from the altercation.
Lawyer for Brown, Mark Geragos said that under the terms of the plea deal, Brown would receive five years of supervised probation and six months of community labor. He would be allowed to complete his community service in his home state of Virginia but would have to return to California for updates every three months.
Brown has been ordered to stay at least 50 yards away from Rihanna at all times with the exception of music industry events they are both attending. At such times, her zone of privacy is limited to 10 yards. Rihanna did not seek any such restrictions on Brown.
