As the international telecommunications submarine cables were damaged by an earthquake that took place in the eastern part of Taiwan Tuesday morning, Macao's Internet service was partially interrupted, the Macao Daily Times reported Wednesday.
The daily quoted the local telecom company CTM as saying that the damage affected Internet service around Asia, and the company proceeded to activate a series of contingency measures such as rerouting data transmission through other telecom cables.
Major telecom operators in the Chinese mainland confirmed that the damage of telecom submarine cables caused by Typhoon Morakot and the earthquake in Taiwan led to a breakdown of Internet service in the region, and it would take at least three weeks to complete the repair work.
CTM also said that since the telecom cables needed time to be fixed, part of the outbound network would be slightly congested during peak hours.
