With the countdown of Disneyland project in Shanghai begins, Hong Kong Disneyland came to Shanghai to attract customers on September 15, 2009. Talking about the competition between the two Disney theme parks, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Chief Executive Officer Andrew Kam did not worry too much.
Kam says, currently one third of Hong Kong Disneyland tourists come from Chinese mainland, among which more than half tourists are from Guangdong province, mainly from Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Therefore, Hong Kong Disneyland is not very worried about that Shanghai Disneyland will have a great impact on the Hong Kong theme park.
Kam believes that China's tourism industry is still in its infancy, and tourists spending power is on the rise. After Shanghai Disneyland starts operation, it may not reduce tourists of Hong Kong Disneyland.
In the United States with the population of 350 million, there are two major Disney parks, and a total of six theme parks, basically every park are attracting local consumers and tourists. Therefore, Kam believes that in these two large economic zones of the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, each have its own theme park will not cause segregation or conflict.
However, though claiming it will not be affected by Shanghai Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland is apparently unwilling to give up this important market in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta. Andrew Kam's visit to Shanghai recently is mainly to promote Hong Kong's Disneyland's latest expansion plan.
As the smallest Disney theme park in the world, the Hong Kong Disneyland has always been criticized for its small size and limited choice of game projects. In response, the Hong Kong Disneyland has been adding new projects since it opened in 2005, and in July this year it announced massive expansion plans.
