Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua expressed his warm welcome for Chinese investment in the country's power sector during a meeting with a Chinese delegation in the Presidential Villa here on Friday.
Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State, who led a delegation of Chinese investors and state government officials to the villa, told local media that the president had expressed interest in tapping into the Chinese experience.
The team was in Abuja to brief Yar'Adua on plans by the Chinese to develop a free trade zone in the state.
Daniel said that in the course of discussion, the president requested that the Chinese return for further discussion on the possibility of their investment in power generation in the country.
He said that the Chinese had expertise in setting up small power stations which had ultimately led to their self-sufficiency in power generation, explaining that Nigeria would want to tap into that experience.
The governor said that the 10,000 megawatts of electricity, which Nigeria was striving to attain, was just 3 percent of Chinese consumption.
