Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun met in Beijing on Friday with with a delegation of the Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BUP) from Surinam led by Caprio Alendy, chairman of the party and vice-speaker of the Surinamese National Assembly.

Li, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, spoke positively on the recent developments of bilateral relations, highlighting cooperation in the fields of science and technology, culture, education and tourism.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to ties with Surinam and would continue to develop bilateral relations based on the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, Li said.

Alendy said he is glad to witness the achievements China has made on the economic and social construction during the trip, pledging to push forward bilateral ties with more contributions.

Before the meeting, the two sides signed an agreement of exchange and cooperation, in which the BUP promises to continue to stick to the one-China policy, acknowledge the government of the People's Republic of China as the only legal government representing China and would never establish official or quasi-official relations with Taiwan.

The delegation is here on a visit from Sept. 3 to Sept.10.
