A senior Chinese official has called for more efforts to develop public cultural services to satisfy people with different needs.

Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during a visit to central China's Hubei Province from Sept. 3 to 6.

Li said China should build more cultural facilities and provide more cultural works to the public.

He stressed the importance of including the system of public cultural service in the overall economic and social development program of governments at all levels.

"Priority should be given to mass cultural activities and cultural facilities in rural areas," he said.

Li also urged the public to study in depth the important speech made by President Hu Jintao on June 25. In the speech, Hu expounded a series of important theoretical issues on the development of the CPC and the nation.

During the inspection tour, Li encouraged people in schools, enterprises and countryside to work hard and promote social harmony to great the convention of the 17th national party congress scheduled for mid-October.
