The central authorities of the Communist Party of China (CPC) launched a symposium on Monday for the newly elected members and alternate members of the CPC Central Committee.

Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese president, delivered a keynote speech at the start of the symposium held at the CPC Central Party School. The content of Hu's speech is not available.

The symposium is held to strengthen the "self-construction" of the CPC Central Committee and encourage the whole Party to better follow the spirit of the 17th CPC National Congress, Xinhua was told.

The attendants will study the essence of the congress through special reports, group discussions and self-study. They will also strive to apply it to their ways of thinking and all aspects of their work, and to the major theoretical and practical issues concerning the country's reform and development.

Members of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Li Changchun, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang attended the opening ceremony, and Xi Jinping presided over the ceremony.

The current 17th CPC Central Committee has 204 members and 167 alternate members.
