The 2008 National Conference of Directors of Administration Bureaus of Cultural Heritage was held on December 22 in Beijing, and Cai Wu, Minister of Culture attended the meeting. Cai emphasized that free admission to museums is a major adjustment in the recent culture policies of China and attracting more people to visit the museums is an important means in which to guarantee and develop the basic cultural rights of the people.
According to statistics, at present, over 1,000 museums in China are open to the public at no charge. By the end of November, visitors to museums had exceeded 100 million, twice as many as the same period last year.
Shan Jixiang, Director General of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) said, in the coming year China will continue to promote free admission to museums. SACH will work with local governments to build museums at the national level, establish quality evaluation systems of free admission to museums, and further improve supporting systems and measures.
