The Communist Party of China (CPC) punished 26,222 grassroots Party cadres working in the country's rural areas in the first 11 months of 2007, CPC's disciplinary watchdog said on Friday in a brief statement.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) of the CPC found the cadres had broken laws or breached Party rules in 24,290 cases, according to the statement.

The CCDI said it had stepped up its crackdown on the illegal activities of rural grassroots cadres.
