Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Sunday cut the ribbons to launch the operation of Tibet's first expressway, a 37.8-km four-lane road linking urban Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, with its airport.
Heading a 59-member delegation of the central government, Xi arrived at Lhasa on Sunday to attend a series of celebrations to mark Tibet's peaceful liberation 60 years ago. Officials of the delegation attended the ribbon cutting ceremony of the airport expressway after their arrival at Lhasa's Gonggar Airport.
The expressway will shorten the travel time from downtown Lhasa to the airport by half an hour. Construction of the expressway began in April 2009 and the expressway cost 1.59 billion yuan (246 million U.S. dollars) to build.
