During the 11th Five-year Plan period (2006-10), China's space sector will focus on nine tasks including major scientific and technological projects and the expansion of space applications, according to a statement made by the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense on October 18.
According to the country's approved 11th Five-year Plan on space development, the nine tasks are: enhancing product supply; launching major scientific and technological projects; promoting independent, national innovation; accelerating space technologies; expanding space applications; maintaining space research; strengthening industrial management; training professionals; and intensifying international exchange and cooperation.
During this period, China will make breakthroughs in astronauts' extravehicular activity (EVA) and rendezvous between spacecraft; construct space labs of a certain scale; and follow-up on manned space flight.
Meanwhile, priority will be given to developing high-resolution observation systems using satellites, aircraft, and stratosphere airships; as well as corresponding ground facilities.
Before 2010, the Beidou (Big Dipper) satellite navigation system will be improved to meet the demands of users from China and surrounding regions. The system will be transformed into a global network that can be used for air traffic control, city intelligence transportation, and communication.
While launching the first lunar probe, in-depth studies will be done on the second and third stages of the national lunar exploration program; and engineering work will begin when the time is right.
