A newly report shows that the number of China’s scientific papers rose sharply, second only to U.S. in quantity, according to Reuters.

The report said that China has a noticeable improvement in scientific research and it may surpass the US in the coming 10 years.

The report said Chinese researchers had published 20,000 scientific papers in 1998 and reached 112,000 papers in 2008, which outstrips Japan, Britain and Germany in quality. In the same period, the number of US’ scientific research papers increased from 265,000 to 340,000, 30 percent up than 1998.

In addition, the report pointed out that China's research is with more emphasis on physical science and technology, especially materials science, chemistry as well as physics.
