Beijing Olympic Village vice minister Deng Yaping said in Beijing on January 15th that the Beijing Olympic Village will open on July 27, 2008. According to reports, the Olympic Village will close on August 27. During the Paralympics, the Olympic Village will change into a Paralympic Village: it will open on August 30 and close on September 20.

Deng Yaping said that the Olympic village is divided into three areas: the Residential district, where 205 delegations will reside; the International District, the region that provides business services; and the Operations district, the area that provides support such as logistics, and communications. The three districts are regularly maintained and securely managed. Athletes'apartments are 6-storey or 9-storey buildings.

The Residential District has 12 service centers to provide accommodation, front desk service and related information. Restaurants and snack bars in the Residential Area provide 24-hour services to meet the needs of people of different ethnic groups and different religious beliefs. The indoor living area has a fitness training center, jogging path, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts and other recreational facilities; as well as a sports cafe, game room, DVD Office, and other entertainment facilities.

Religious services for five major religions (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism) are offered in areas of religious worship in the village centre.

The Beijing Olympic Village occupies 66 hectares, to its south is the main Olympic stadium; and to the north, Forest Park, which is a beautiful environment that is easily accessible and less than 3 kilometers away from the National Stadium, the "Bird’s nest." It is located on the northern end of greater Beijing, and is an important component of the Olympic Park.
