Recently experts from Italy, the United States and other foreign countries, invited by Zhao Fengtong, deputy mayor of Beijing, will be involved in air quality protection during the Beijing Olympics. This is the first time Beijing has hired foreign experts to participate in air quality monitoring.

This Olympic Air Quality Protection Experts Group consists of 12 top environmental experts from the Chinese mainland, 2 from Hong Kong and others from Italy and the United States. The involvement of top foreign environmental experts will ensure professional air quality monitoring during the Beijing Olympics, said Du Shaozhong, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau.

The experts will primarily participate in air quality monitoring during the Olympics and provide suggestions to improve the air quality. Meanwhile, they will evaluate necessary safeguards and ensure good air quality during the Olympics.

Ivo Allegrini, director of Italy's National Research Institute of Atmospheric Pollution, revealed that he and a team of 10 experts would stay in Beijing for the whole of August and monitor Beijing's air quality. In addition to data obtained Beijing's environmental protection departments, the working group will also use its own air quality monitoring equipment and provide results to Beijing's environmental protection departments.
