Since the launch of the "computer recycling plan" in mid-January this year, a total of 10,800 old computer products, including 4,600 CPUs, 2,600 monitors and 3,600 printers/scanners have been collected by the end of May. This announcement was made on July 2nd by Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau Tang-wah of Hong Kong SAR.

Mr. Yau explained that at the Legislative Council, among the old computers collected, 250 better quality and reusable machines have been sent to charity organizations as donations for those in need. Approximately 70 percent have been taken apart for recycling purposes. The remaining 2,400 monitors are being temporarily stored and awaiting processing.

The "computer recycling plan" is a regional activity promoted by the HK SAR Government in partnership with 20 major computer manufacturers and suppliers.

This is also the second voluntary "producer's responsibility scheme" following the rechargeable battery recycling program. The Hong Kong Electric and Electronics Equipment Recycling Association is responsible for the management and promotion of the plan.
