According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, during the first half of the year, employment in cities and towns nationwide has increased by 6.4 million, 64% of the annual goal. In addition, 2.82 million laid-off employees found new jobs, 56% of the annual goal.
Those who formerly had difficulty finding employment obtained 770,000 jobs, which make up 77% of the annual goal. “After the heavy snowstorm and severe earthquake, it has been quite difficult and satisfying to see employment maintain the same level as last year," said Yin Weiping, the Minister of Human Resources and Social Security.
He also said that employment is under unprecedented pressure. Firstly, the demand for jobs by young people has hit a new high as millions graduate from college. Secondly, from the beginning of this year, the snowstorm, earthquake, severe flooding and drought have heavily impacted employment, forcing a number of enterprises to halt production and private industries and businesses to close, and leaving thousands without work. Thirdly, some state-owned organizations have closed or gone bankrupt due to weak policies. They aim to save energy, reduce emissions and eliminate inefficiency. The relocation of staff, as a result, becomes quite difficult. Fourth, the current qualifications of the labor force do not appear to meet the demands of vacancies. Some regions, with a severe contradiction between supply and demand, confront difficulties both in employment and recruitment. Fifth, uncertain factors which influence economic development have increased, making it more difficult to push employment forward and create new jobs.
