A coal mine flood in north China's Shanxi Province trapped 13 people on Saturday night, the local work safety authority has confirmed. Rescue efforts are under way.

The accident happened at about 11:40 p.m. at the Wangzhuang Coal Mining Co., Ltd. in Changzhi City, said an official with the provincial work safety bureau on Sunday.

There were 82 people working underground at the time and 69 escaped safely.

The mine is state-owned with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons.
