As required by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), weather forecasts for the 2008 Olympic venues will be made 72 hours prior to scheduled events- 24 hours earlier than during the previous Olympics in Athens and Sydney.
At the press conference held on July 15 by the Beijing International Media Center, one of three Olympic press centers, Chen Zhenlin, an official from the China Meteorological Administration, declared that China is up to the challenge. He said that weather information would be disseminated through TVs, mobile phones, hot lines and the Internet, in addition to an English phone line. Electronic screens in the 31 venues will also display weather-related information.
The 72-hour forecasts will be updated four times a day and 24-hour forecasts for some venues will be updated three times a day.
Specific weather information services for the Olympics will also be provided for special events like the opening and closing ceremonies, city operations, and the public as well, Chen added.
