During the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing will decorate the city with 40 million flower pots. Recycled rain and flood water has been used as much as possible in the city's irrigation system where water remains scarce.
Officials from the local landscape and forestation bureau announced at a press conference what Beijing has done to make the city greener over the years.
Currently 43 percent of Beijing's surface area is covered by trees and flowers, increasing from 36 percent in 2000. Public green space per capita is 12.6 square meters, rising from 9.66 square meters in 2000.
According to statistics, reclaimed rain and flood water accounts for 60 percent of the irrigation maintaining the green coverage.
In this green system, local trees which can withstand drought are used. The green area can preserve water which can be reserved in the underground water system. Major reservoirs in Beijing, including those in Huairou, Jinhaihu and Miyun, are surrounded with trees. “With those trees, the reservoirs are now working much better,” said one official.
