A funeral was held in Shanghai on Wednesday for six police officers killed in a stabbing attack on July 1.

More than 1,000 mourners attended the function for Fang Fuxin, Zhang Yijie, Ni Jingrong, Li Ke, Zhang Jianping and Xu Weiya, aged 47 to 56.

The alleged killer, 28-year-old Beijing resident Yang Jia, is said to have stabbed a security guard at the Shanghai police branch in Zhabei and started a fire at its gate around 9:40 a.m. on July 1, before forcing his way into the building and attacking nine police officers.

The guard and three policemen injured in the attack are still hospitalized.

The No. 2 division of the Shanghai Municipal People's Procuratorate last Thursday brought charges against Yang of the premeditated murder of unarmed police.

It is not known when his trial will begin. Yang's mother has reportedly hired two lawyers for his defense.
