Southern Daily reported that people in five positions, including teachers, editors, journalists, proofreaders and civil servants, will have to take a test on Chinese characters in 11 provinces, according to the Ministry of Education. The 11 provinces have been chosen as pilot districts, including Shanghai, Tianjin, Henan, Hebei, Jiangsu, Hunan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Shandong, Yunnan and Ningxia.
Director of the Language and Characters Usage Department of the Ministry of Education Yu Hong said that the test consists of 120 questions which assess participants' ability to recognize, read, use, correct and write Chinese characters. The test is expected to be held in late October and mid-November. Current data shows that about 50,000 people will take the test.
