The authorities of Guangdong province are poised to establish a modern industrial system throughout the region, according to a senior provincial government official.
Huang Huahua, the governor of the province, said the provincial government has developed a series of policies over recent years, all of them aimed at optimizing the province's industrial structure. These include support for so-called "mega projects" and the promotion of greater collaboration with large State-owned enterprises (SOEs).
With the outline of the reform plan for the Pearl River Delta formally approved by the central government at the end of last year, the delta scheme has now been adopted as part of the nation's overall development strategy. This will see the nine cities in southern China's Guangdong province transformed into advanced manufacturing and modern service centers.
Huang said: "We are accordingly mapping out an extensive scheme to further revitalize and restructure local industries."
The scheme is designed to cover 11 key sectors - iron and steel, automobiles, shipping, petrochemicals, textiles, light industry, nonferrous metals, machines and equipment, electronic information, logistics, and construction materials.
The first 10 sectors are also listed by the National Reform and Development Commission, China's top economic planning body, as the nation's priority industries for restructuring and revitalization. Nine of the sectors, when combined, currently contribute one-third to the nation's gross domestic product (GDP).
