Bar in historic building temporarily closed in south China after warning

A newly-opened bar in the Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy building, a protected historic site, has temporarily closed in south China's Guangdong Province after local authorities issued a warning notice.
The bar owner altered some parts of the building changing its original appearance and thus broke the state law on protection of cultural relics, Li Xianheng, a member of the assessment panel, told a press briefing Tuesday.
On Feb. 27, the Guangzhou City Administration of Press, Publication, Radio and Television ordered the bar owner to suspend business and restore the building to its original form, said Liu Yuhuan, a spokesman with the administration.
Established in 1924, the Huangpu Military Academy was a world-renowned school for military officers. The building it was based in, located on Changzhou Island in Huangpu, about 20 km from Guangzhou, the provincial capital, was declared a protected historic site in 1987.
