Beijing will have 30 subway lines by 2020, with a total track length of over 1,000 kilometers and 450 stations, according to the city's plan for rail transportation from 2011 to 2020.

By then, in the area inside the Fourth Ring Road, the subway coverage rate will reach 95 percent, and there will be a 1.4 kilometer-long subway line for every square kilometer, enabling one to walk to a subway station within 10 to 15 minutes.

According to the plan, the urban subway system, suburban subway system, intercity railway and high-speed railway will form the major rail transit network of the city.

The plan will give more emphasis to increase the density of subway lines in downtown area and guide more people to use the rail transit via newly-constructed facilities.
