Seminar calls for greater cooperation on food security

Senior officials and experts have called on the international community to strengthen cooperation in food security at a symposium in Beijing Thursday.

Addressing the International Symposium of Food Security, Ma Xiaotian, Deputy Chief of the General Staff and Chairman of the China Institute for International Strategic Studies, said food security has become a global issue that constrains the social and economic development of many countries and international security. The international community should attach importance to the issue and step up cooperation in this area.

A food shortage will be disastrous for the world. The world community should join hands together to tackle this challenge, said Romano Prodi, former Chairman of the European Commission.

Food security has become a common challenge for the world, and it will be beneficial for the development of the world if solutions to this issue could be found at the symposium, said Katie Chan, chair of the Katie Chan Foundation.

A total of 60 officials and experts from the world attended the symposium, which is sponsored by China Institute for Strategic Studies and the Katie Chan Foundation.
