Today, May 12, is the third "Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day" of China due to the well-known Wenchuan earthquake that hit China three years ago.
Xin Baoshan, the director of Red Cross Society of China's training center, said on May 11 that more than 8 million people die of non-natural causes every year in China, excluding those people who die because of unexpected natural disasters and terrible accidents caused by force majeure. But, he also believes that 80 percent of unnatural deaths can be avoided.
He believes that lots of people do not die from diseases or accidental disasters but rather ignorance.
Currently, only 1 percent of Chinese people have ever received training in emergency response or self and mutual medical aid, which is very low comparing with some other countries. In addition, many countries also require that applicants should hold certain first aid certifications when looking for a job.
