China reiterated Tuesday that negotiations and diplomatic means were the "sole right way" to solve the Korean peninsula nuclear issue.

At a routine news briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gangagain called on the relevant parties to remain calm and restrained, resolve the issue through dialogue and consultation and avoid actions that might worsen the tense situation.

He said all parties concerned should continue to propel the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and jointly maintain the peace and stability of the peninsula and the northeast Asia region.

The U.N. Security Council on Friday unanimously approved Resolution 1874, which allowed wider sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) over its May 25 nuclear test.

The resolution demanded that the DPRK "not conduct any further nuclear test or any launch using ballistic missile technology" and urged the country to come back to the six-party talks without preconditions.

It also banned all weapons exports from the DPRK and most arms imports into the country. It authorized U.N. member states to inspect the DPRK's sea, air and land cargo and required them to seize and destroy any goods transported in violation of the sanctions

Asked whether China would board DPRK ships suspected of carrying items related to the nuclear program, Qin said the issue was written explicitly into resolution 1874 and China would seriously implement the UN resolution like other UN member states.
