A Seoul court issued an arrest warrant late Thursday for a former Seoul police station chief accused of trying to cover up an alleged assault involving a localtycoon, local media reported on Friday.
Jang Hee-gon, the former head of the Namdaemun Police Station in downtown Seoul, is suspected of abusing power and neglecting duty by ordering subordinates to stop an investigation into the case involving Kim Seung-youn, chairman of Hanwha Group.
"The arrest of Jang is necessary because what he has done was revealed. He also tried to destroy evidence while the prosecutors'investigation was under way," officials at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said.
Jang effectively held up the case for more than a month until it attracted wide media attention in late April.
Kim faces a two-year jail sentence if convicted of assaulting agroup of Seoul bar workers in revenge for an attack on his son.
The prosecution has also been investigating Kim Hak-bae, the former investigative director of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, on suspicions that he influenced the initial stage of the police investigation into the case.
