The Spanish authorities have brokenup a Russian-run ring that trafficked in women and arrested 88 people in connection with the group, police said on Thursday.
During police raids in Almeria, Granada and Lleida, 21 traffickers, including ringleaders, and 67 women staying illegallyin Spain were arrested. Police estimated 6,000 women have been exploited by the ring.
The Russians would send all the money earned by these women, who worked as prostitutes, back to Russia where it was laundered through investments.
Investigations into the ring, which began in November, have identified 39 people in Russia linked to the trafficking.
One ringleader, whom police identified as Sergei K., was arrested in Ukraine on an international arrest warrant issued by Belgian judges.
The ring tricked women into prostitution by offering them work as travel agents or models. Once overseas, however, the women wereconfined in brothels where they were threatened and abused.
