The Pakistani military Tuesday killed 50 militants in an operation against a radical mosque in the capital, military said.

Eight soldiers died in Operation Silence and 29 others were wounded, said military spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad here at a press conference.

13 of the 50 surrendered students were injured, he said.

Arshad said that stun guns were used to minimize casualties.

He said that no gas was used in the operation.

Arshad said that it would take time to clear all 75 rooms in the huge mosque complex.

The military launched Operation Silence at 0400 local time Tuesday (2300 GMT Monday) after failure of talks to persuade the militants the Lal Masjid mosque to surrender.
