Lebanese army troops are expected to launch an all-out decisive battle against armed militants holed up in a refugee camp in northern Lebanon within 48 hours, local Ad- Diyar daily reported on Tuesday.

The army planned a three-pronged final assault on Nahr al-Bared camp, 12 km north of Lebanese northern city of Tripoli, to crush hideouts of Fatah al-Islam group "and wipe out this phenomenon," according to the report.

Army artillerymen have already started intensive bombardment of the gunmen's strongholds to pave way for the expected showdown, it said.

The Lebanese army have been battling with the militants of Fatah al-Islam holed up in the Nahr al-Bared camp since May 20. The bloodiest internal violence since the Lebanese 1975-1990 civil war has killed some 200 people.

The Lebanese government lists Fatah al-Islam as a terrorist network aimed at destabilizing Lebanon.
