Pakistani operation against armed men in besieged Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, in Islamabad was in the final phase Wednesday, the military said.
Intermittent explosions were still heard at the surroundings of the mosque and seminary compound Wednesday morning. Pakistani military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad Wednesday said now the first part of work was focused on getting the Lal Masjid mosque and affiliated Jamia Hafsa seminary cleared and vacated. Nothing definite could be said about the death toll of militants inside the mosque, He said, adding that three more militants were killed in the overnight fighting with the army. The second part of the work was to ensure that there was no mine or bomb within Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, Arshad said. Following that, media could be allowed later Wednesday to enter the compound for visit, according to the military.
