The East African Community ( EAC) on Friday launched in Arusha of northern Tanzania a Nyerere Center for Peace Research.

Attending the launching ceremony were senior government officials from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and scholars from the United States, according to a statement issued by EAC spokesman Magaga Alot.

The research center was named after Tanzania's founding president Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere who is internationally revered as the champion of African liberation.

The center was set up as an EAC institution in collaboration with the Arcadia University of the United States to study peace, security and conflict resolution in east Africa.

The objective of the Nyerere Center for Peace Research is to undertake research and exchange programs on conflict management and resolution, the EAC spokesman said.

The programs at the Arusha-based center will provide a link between theory and practice relevant to peace building, conflict resolution, policy research, data collection and analysis, and training.

The research center will also provide support for policy-makers in governments and in regional economic communities and in civil society organizations with a view to increasing capacity to promote peaceful settlement of conflicts in the region.
