The Lebanese army continued on Sunday its bombardment on positions of Fatah al-Islam in a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon and one soldier was killed during the fierce battle. The army offensive "nailed down several main militant trenches and posts which are used through the main road of the old camp as a safe haven in running military operations," local ANB TV reported. A military spokesman was quoted as saying that a soldier was killed as the Lebanese army battled for the eighth week to crush Fatah al-Islam extremists holing up in a small enclave on the southern tip of Nahr al-Bared camp, located north of the city of Tripoli.
Also in the day, the official National News Agency said the Fatah al-Islam militants fired at least 11 rockets into north Lebanon's Akkar province in apparent retaliation for the army's shelling of terrorist hideouts inside the camp, but caused no casualties.
The Lebanese army have been battling with the militants of Fatah al-Islam in the Nahr al-Bared camp since May 20. The bloodiest internal violence since the Lebanese 1975-1990 civil war has killed some 200 people. The Lebanese government lists Fatah al-Islam as a terrorist network aimed at destabilizing Lebanon.
