The Singapore Armed Forces, the United States Navy (USN) and the United States Coast Guard launched a joint exercise at Changi Naval Base on Tuesday.

The annual Singapore-U.S. Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise, which started in 1995, will last half a month long, aiming to enhance interoperability and professional cooperation between the two armed forces through mutually beneficial training exercises, Singapore Defense Ministry said in a statement.

This year's exercise, the thirteen in its series, will involve land, sea and air elements from the two armed forces, including 1, 500 personnel, 13 ships, a submarine, fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

It will focus on conventional maritime warfare competencies, such as anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, maritime air operations, as well as maritime security operations, said the statement.

The highlight of this year's exercise is the participation of RSS FORMIDABLE - Singapore Navy's first Formidable-class stealth frigate. It will be the primary command and control platform at sea for the two forces during the sea phase of the exercise. For the first time, a USN SH-60B helicopter will operate from RSS FORMIDABLE to carry out anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare missions as part of the exercise.

The exercise will conclude on July 31, according to the statement.
