A Polish officer suddenly died at the military base in al-Divaniyah in Iraq, spokesman for the defense ministry Jaroslaw Rybak told the Polish PAP news agency on Wednesday.

Major Jaroslaw Posadzy, 39, was from the 25th Airborne cavalry in Poland's Tomaszow Mazowiecki, and also the commander of the independent airborne storm group.

Posadzy died despite immediate resuscitation after suddenly fainting at the military base. The cause of his sudden death will be known after a post-mortem.

Currently, about 900 Polish soldiers are deployed in Iraq. At the end of last year, Polish President Lech Kaczynski approved the prolongation of the mission in Iraq until the end of 2007.
