A soldier was wounded when insurgents detonated a bomb at a school in Thailand's southern Pattani Province on Thursday morning, just a few hours before army chief Sonthi Boonyaratkalin visited the province. The blast went off in Yaring district Thursday morning when the soldier was guarding teachers to a local school. He was severely injured and rushed to a nearby hospital. The blast occurred prior to Sonthi's visit to the region. He was scheduled to meet with governors of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat to discuss security measures in the restive South, and to boost the morale of security forces. Sonthi was quoted by the Bangkok Post's webnews as saying that equipment used in cutting off remote control and mobile phone signals will need to be developed in order to prevent more casualties from the unrest. On Tuesday, a bomb disposal officer was killed and 20 injured from a blast detonated by a remote control.
Thailand's three southernmost provinces -- Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat have been troubled with insurgency-related violence which has claimed more than 2,300 lives since it resumed in early 2004.
