Pakistani gov't starts demolition of Lal Masjid's affiliated seminary

The Pakistani government on Monday started an operation to demolish the seminary affiliated to the Lal Masjid, or the Red Mosque, in capital Islamabad, private TV channel Geo reported.

Some heavy machinery and other equipment reached the site on Sunday night to demolish the Jamia Hafsa building, some rooms of which declared dangerous had been demolished, according to the TV report.

The government staff are engaged in work within cordon of plastic sheets around the Lal Masjid and its affiliated Jamia Hafsa seminary. The movement of general public has been restricted around 100 meters of Lal Masjid and the affiliated religious school Jamia Hafsa in Islamabad, said the report.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz last Thursday said that the government had been repairing the Lal Masjid and would open it later.
